Deadliest Catch Season 22: Sig Hansen Faces New Captain Alliance

Deadliest Catch Season 22

The Hunt for 'Genetic Monsters': High-Tech Tools and Frozen Frontiers

The Season 22 premiere of Deadliest Catch has officially raised the stakes, moving the fleet into treacherous northern territories that haven't been fished in over two decades. The goal? A rare breed of pureblood northern king crabs. These "genetic monsters" are twice the size of standard crabs, sporting brighter colors and thicker shells, but finding them has ignited a fierce war of nerves between the legendary captains.

A High-Tech Betrayal at Sea

The drama began when Sig Hansen (Northwestern) decided to bypass his usual allies. Instead of sharing intel with longtime friend Johnathan Hillstrand, Sig partnered with "Wild" Bill Wichrowski. Using a high-tech underwater Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), the duo successfully tracked the crab school deeper into the freezing northeast.

The move left Hillstrand’s Time Bandit in the dark. "I’m getting ghosted," Hillstrand remarked after Sig ignored his radio calls. The perceived betrayal didn't stay quiet for long, as Keith Colburn of the Wizard spotted the secret alliance on his radar, noting that Sig and Bill were "in cahoots" just half a mile apart.

Smoke Screens and Sabotage

In a classic "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" move, Hillstrand and Colburn formed a tactical alliance to derail Sig’s progress. The retaliation was physical and immediate:

The Smoke Screen: The Time Bandit deployed a literal wall of smoke, blinding the Northwestern and forcing it off course.

Line Tangling: In the chaos, Hillstrand’s crew tangled Sig’s fishing lines, causing a massive delay for the high-tech mission.

The Verdict: Collaboration Over Conflict

Despite the sabotage, Sig’s ROV data proved superior. While the Time Bandit and Wizard struggled with empty pots, the Northwestern continued to pull in massive hauls. Eventually, the reality of the Bering Sea set in: the school of crab was too large for one boat to manage alone.

In a surprising truce, Sig invited his rivals back into the fold to pinpoint the "edge" of the crab school. The episode concluded with a rare moment of peace as Hillstrand apologized for the smoke screen. As Sig noted, when the "genetic monsters" are this big, the "big picture" of a massive payday outweighs any personal grudge.

Deadliest Catch airs Fridays at 8/7c on Discovery.
