James Cameron’s sci-fi epic “Avatar: Fire and Ash” continued its strong run at the box office, holding the No. 1 spot through the busy Christmas holiday period. The film added $88 million since Christmas Day, including $64 million from the traditional three-day weekend, showing impressive staying power.
The third installment of the Avatar franchise has now earned $217.7 million in North America and $760 million globally after just two weekends. Its performance is even stronger than 2022’s sequel, which saw a much steeper drop after opening. With both previous Avatar films ruling the charts for weeks, industry experts expect this chapter to remain on top well into the new year.
While Avatar 3 dominated, several holiday releases helped keep theaters packed. Disney’s “Zootopia 2” climbed back to second place in its fifth weekend, proving its continued appeal among families.
Among the new releases, “Marty Supreme” emerged as the biggest success. The A24 sports dramedy earned $17.4 million over the weekend and $27.1 million across the four-day holiday frame, marking the studio’s second-biggest opening ever. Strong reviews and enthusiastic audience reactions played a major role in its solid debut.
The film benefits heavily from its lead star Timothée Chalamet, whose energetic promotion and fan following helped generate buzz. Around 65% of the audience was under 35, and CinemaScore exit polls awarded the movie a B+ grade, signaling healthy word-of-mouth that could carry it through the coming weeks.
Sony’s action-comedy “Anaconda” landed in fifth place, collecting $14.6 million over the weekend and $23.7 million since Christmas. Despite mixed reviews, the film managed a decent start thanks to its star power and holiday traffic.
Meanwhile, Focus Features’ musical drama “Song Sung Blue” opened modestly but showed promise with older audiences. The film earned an A grade on CinemaScore, the best among new releases, suggesting steady growth as word spreads among mature moviegoers.
Overall, the Christmas box office delivered a healthy mix of blockbuster dominance and fresh releases, with Avatar 3 clearly leading the charge while new titles found their own space in a crowded holiday season.
