What Could Happen to Varang After Avatar: Fire and Ash?

James Cameron’s Avatar films are famous for pushing the limits of visual effects and motion capture, and Avatar: Fire and Ash continued that tradition. The third film introduced audiences to a powerful new Na’vi clan known as the Mangkwan, or Ash People, and brought a memorable new villain to the franchise.

Actress Oona Chaplin played Varang, the fierce leader of the Ash People, and her performance quickly became one of the most talked-about elements of the movie. While critical reactions to Fire and Ash were mixed, many viewers agreed that Varang stood out as a major highlight.

Unlike several characters in the film’s emotional finale, Varang survives the ending of Avatar 3. This has sparked plenty of discussion about where her story could go next. In a recent interview with Gold Derby, Chaplin hinted that Varang’s journey may be far from over.

She shared that there is “an interesting evolution” planned for the Ash People and suggested they could play an important role in the larger Avatar storyline. According to Chaplin, there are many exciting possibilities ahead, and she is eager to continue exploring Varang as a character.

The Ash People’s backstory left a strong impression on fans. After losing their home to a devastating volcanic eruption — and feeling abandoned by Eywa — their grief turned into rage. Their alliance with Quaritch, who armed them with advanced weapons, made them even more dangerous, though they ultimately lost the film’s final battle.

This defeat raises an important question: will Varang become even more extreme in future films, or will she learn something new from this loss?

Chaplin also reflected on Varang’s complicated connection with Quaritch and how his apparent death could shape her future actions. She wondered whether Varang might carry forward his vendetta against Jake or choose a completely different path. With Quaritch gone and the Ash People scattered, Varang’s next move remains uncertain. Whether she continues the mission they started together or forges her own destiny may be revealed in the upcoming Avatar sequels — if they move forward as planned.

For now, fans will have to wait and see how Pandora’s story continues and whether Varang returns as an even more powerful force in the Avatar universe.
