Tyler Perry’s latest feature on Netflix steps into heavy territory, tracking a romance that sparks behind bars and tries to survive the trials of the real world. Unfortunately, what could have been an earnest study of resilience turns into a frustratingly uneven watch. The film attempts to balance grit with a tender love story, but it ultimately gets weighed down by a clunky narrative and forced plot turns.

The story kicks off when a violent prison uprising puts staff members in severe danger. Anika, working as a correctional officer, finds herself cornered by rioters with no obvious way out. Enter Carousel, an inmate serving a long sentence for a shooting committed when he was just fourteen years old. Risking his own safety, Carousel shields Anika from the attackers and escorts her to a secure cell until authorities regain control.

That act of bravery leaves a lasting mark. Years later, after Carousel is released and starts navigating life on the outside, the two reconnect. What begins as a memory of a terrifying day slowly morphs into an unexpected romance, giving both characters a sense of being understood away from the judgments of their pasts.
While the central premise offers plenty of emotional potential, the execution struggles to keep its footing. The movie tosses in a barrage of high-drama obstacles, including a failing mother, financial strains, and a messy family secret involving stolen money and sibling betrayal. Yet, these conflicts often feel tacked on rather than earned, rushing through heavy emotional beats without giving the characters room to breathe.
Even Carousel's transition back into society feels suspiciously smooth, bypassing the genuine hardships of starting over from scratch. Instead of letting the relationship grow naturally out of shared grit, the narrative leans into convenient plot conveniences and awkward tonal shifts.
