A Different World Cast: Meet the New Hillman Students

A Different World Cast

A Different World Cast Guide: Who’s Who at Hillman College?

Hillman College is back, but this time there is a new group of students trying to figure out where they fit in.

Netflix’s A Different World brings together a younger generation of Hillman students with several familiar faces from the original series. The result is a cast that connects the history of the franchise with a new set of characters, ambitions and campus problems.

Some students arrive at Hillman with a clear plan. Others are still figuring themselves out. And then there are the faculty members and alumni who know the campus well enough to understand that college life rarely goes according to plan.

With Season 2 confirmed, here’s a closer look at the A Different World cast and the characters they play.

Netflix Takes Fans Back to Hillman College

Meet the New Students at Hillman

The new students are at the heart of the revival, and each comes to Hillman with a very different reason for being there.

Deborah Wayne - Maleah Joi Moon

Deborah Wayne arrives at Hillman carrying a famous family name. She is the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, two characters closely associated with the original series.

But Deborah isn't simply following in her parents' footsteps.

She has a strong creative side, with interests across art, theater and music. After failing to get into her preferred school, Tisch, she finds herself at Hillman and begins working out what she actually wants from college.

Her character gives the new series a direct connection to the show's past while still allowing the story to focus on her own identity.

Rashida Duvall - Alijah Kai

Rashida is studying criminal justice and comes from Compton, California.

As a first-generation college student, she approaches Hillman with a serious attitude and a strong sense of responsibility. That personality doesn't exactly make her the easiest roommate for Deborah, whose approach to college life is considerably more relaxed.

Their different personalities create one of the early sources of tension among the new students.

Shaquille Johnson - Cornell Young IV

Shaquille is already a big name on campus.

A talented quarterback, he chose an HBCU partly because of a promise he made to his late mother. Away from the football spotlight, however, he is dealing with grief that isn't always visible to the people around him.

His father, Ron, is also closely involved in his career, creating another layer to Shaquille's college experience.

Amir Rodale - Jordan Aaron Hall

Amir is a psychology major from Harlem who finds himself dealing with an unexpected housing problem.

With the dorm situation leaving him without a conventional place to stay, he ends up crashing on a community couch.

He is the kind of person who can usually find a solution when someone else has a problem. The challenge is figuring out how to apply that same resourcefulness to his own life.

Hazel Henry - Kennedi Reece

Hazel has dreamed about attending Hillman for years.

Coming from a small town, she enters college with a fairly straightforward idea of what campus life will be like. Hillman's classrooms, friendships and debates quickly begin challenging some of those assumptions.

Her character represents the experience of someone discovering that college can change much more than just your academic future.

Kojo Achebe - Chibuikem Uche

Kojo is studying fashion merchandising and comes from a Nigerian-Ghanaian background.

His parents have a particular idea of what he should be doing at college, but Kojo has his own ambitions. His real interest is fashion design, and he becomes focused on the campus fashion show.

That conflict between parental expectations and personal ambition gives his character a story beyond the usual college experience.

The Original Hillman Favorites Are Back

One of the biggest attractions of the revival is seeing familiar characters return alongside the new generation.

Dwayne Wayne - Kadeem Hardison

Dwayne is no longer the college student audiences remember from the original show.

He has returned to Hillman as a college administrator and now has a much different set of responsibilities. The university is dealing with a serious funding scandal, forcing Dwayne to fight for the institution he once called home.

At the same time, having his daughter Deborah on campus makes his connection to Hillman personal in a completely different way.

Whitley Gilbert - Guy

Whitley has built a successful skin-care business and is returning to Hillman with an established life outside the campus.

But success has brought its own questions. Her return gives her an opportunity to consider who she is beyond her roles as a wife and mother.

Her connection to Deborah also gives the new generation a direct link to one of the franchise's most recognizable characters.

Ron Johnson - Darryl M. Bell

Ron is now working as Shaquille's manager.

His relationship with his son isn't simply about football or business. He is also trying to help Shaquille make decisions about his future while managing his own role in his son's career.

That combination creates a different side of Ron than the audience may remember from the original series.

Freddie Brooks - Cree Summer

Freddie returns as a law professor and practicing attorney.

Her experience makes her one of the people students can turn to when college problems become more complicated than a classroom assignment.

She also serves as an important mentor figure within the Hillman community.

More Familiar Faces Return to Hillman

The revival isn't limiting its nostalgia to just a handful of characters.

Several other alumni also make appearances, including:

  • Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor - Dawnn Lewis

  • Charmaine Brown - Karen Malina White

  • Gina Deveaux - Ajai Sanders

  • Lena James - Jada Pinkett Smith

  • Byron Douglas III - Joe Morton

Their appearances help connect the new series to the wider history of Hillman without taking the spotlight away from the new students.

Meet the Faculty and Hillman Staff

The students aren't the only people shaping life on campus. The faculty and staff bring their own personalities and expectations to Hillman.

Coach Bryce Coles - Method Man

Played by Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Coach Bryce Coles is Hillman's head football coach.

A former NFL player, he takes teamwork seriously and expects his players to understand that success isn't built around individual talent alone.

His role also places him close to Shaquille's storyline.

Professor Isaiah Baptiste - Norman Nixon Jr.

Professor Isaiah Baptiste teaches cultural communication.

His classroom is built around discussion and debate, encouraging students to challenge ideas rather than simply accept them. For a group of students coming from very different backgrounds, that makes his classes an important part of campus life.

President Davenport - Jenifer Lewis

President Davenport has moved from her previous position as dean of students to the top job at Hillman.

She now has to deal with the college's financial difficulties while keeping the institution moving forward.

Dr. Langhorne - Debbie Allen

Dr. Langhorne remains an experienced academic presence at Hillman.

As an advisor, she provides students with guidance that isn't always easy to hear. Her approach combines honesty with the kind of tough love that comes from understanding how quickly college decisions can shape a student's future.

Why the A Different World Cast Matters

The strength of the new A Different World cast comes from the combination of two generations.

The new students give Hillman a different energy, with stories about identity, family expectations, ambition, relationships and finding your place. At the same time, returning characters remind longtime viewers that the campus has a history.

That balance is important for a revival.

The show doesn't have to choose between nostalgia and a completely new story. Deborah, Rashida, Shaquille, Amir, Hazel and Kojo can build their own Hillman experience while characters such as Dwayne, Whitley and Freddie provide a connection to what came before.

With Season 2 confirmed, there is also plenty of room for these relationships to develop further.
