Centre Orders Twitter and Other Social Media Platforms Not to Share Video of Two Women Paraded Nude in Manipur

Amidst the ongoing Manipur violence and outrage over the incident of two women being paraded nude, the Centre and the state government have faced scathing criticism from the opposition. The order emphasized the platforms' responsibility to abide by the country's laws, as an investigation into the matter is underway.

The video in question came to light on May 4, 2023, showing two unidentified women being paraded nude by armed miscreants. Consequently, an FIR was registered against unknown individuals at Nongpok Sekmai PS in Thoubal district for abduction, gang rape, and murder. The police have initiated an investigation and are making all possible efforts to swiftly apprehend the culprits involved.

Notably, the harrowing video has rapidly spread on social media, prompting widespread condemnation and demands for strict action against the perpetrators. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) alleged that after subjecting the women to such a degrading act, they were subjected to mass violence and called for severe action against the criminals.

In response to the incident, Manipur Police tweeted, "On May 4, 2023, a video of unknown armed miscreants parading two women in the nude was made viral. Every possible effort was made to apprehend the culprits. A case has been registered against unknown armed miscreants at Nongpok Sekmai PS in Thoubal district for abduction, gang rape, and murder, and an investigation has commenced. The State Police are taking stringent action. The culprits will be arrested soon."
