Stranger Things may be packed with demogorgons, creepy mind games, and enough Upside Down nightmares to last a lifetime — but somehow, the show still sneaks in some seriously cute romances. From Mike and Eleven to Nancy and Jonathan, fans have been shipping couples nonstop for four seasons. And let’s be real: they’ve also been fighting about these couples nonstop.

But among all the romantic chaos, one pair has stayed surprisingly drama-free: Lucas and Max, the couple who quietly stole the show without any fan wars or “wrong ship” arguments. Honestly, has anyone ever complained about Lumax? Exactly. That’s already a win.
Max first skates into Hawkins Middle in Season 2, and Lucas is instantly gone. Like, GONE gone. He’s smitten before he even knows her last name. Max, of course, gives him the classic tough-girl cold shoulder, but Lucas is persistent in the sweetest way possible. Their junkyard conversation? Still one of the most underrated Stranger Things scenes ever.

What makes Lumax special is how normal they feel. While other couples are busy breaking up dramatically or being separated by supernatural disasters, Lucas and Max are over here having chill, cute, teen-level problems. Even when Max jokingly breaks up with Lucas five times by Season 3, it still feels light, funny, and real — because they're just kids trying to figure things out.
Then came Season 4… and everything changed.
Suddenly, their dynamic went from adorable to painfully emotional. Max is grieving Billy, shutting everyone out, and drowning in guilt. Lucas is trying to find who he is outside the Party, juggling popularity and loyalty. But even with all their personal struggles, Lucas refuses to leave Max alone when Vecna targets her. Their scenes together in Season 4? Absolute heartbreak. Absolute perfection.
if lucas and max don’t get their friday night movie date in season 5, i’m personally entering the upside down to throw hands with vecna myself. ???? i am not asking, i am telling. GIVE THEM THEIR HAPPY ENDING.#StrangerThings #StrangerThings5 #lucas #max #lumax pic.twitter.com/8VBPWxWvWq

And then Lucas hits us with the most romantic line in the entire show:
“I see you now.”
Excuse me?? TEARS. FLOODGATES. OPEN.
Season 4 pulls apart almost every couple — and sure, some of them maybe should stay apart for a bit (sorry, Mileven fans… please don’t attack me). But Lucas and Max? They’re the one couple I was desperately rooting for to find their way back to each other.
Right now, everything hinges on Season 5. Max is in a coma, Lucas is heartbroken, and Lumax deserves way more screen time. Whether they stay the show’s best couple depends on what happens next — but if Max wakes up and these two get their reunion?
Yeah, Lumax supremacy will rise again.
