Olivia Rodrigo’s Dress Transforms onstage During ‘Unraveled Tour’ Opening Night

The 23-year-old singer was performing “the cure” at People’s Bank Arena in Hartford on Friday night when artificial rain began falling around her. As Rodrigo continued singing, the white sleeveless dress gradually separated, revealing a red corset bodysuit and a micro miniskirt underneath.

Fan-shot videos showed Rodrigo standing in the rain as the unusual costume transformation unfolded around her. The moment also connected with the lyrics of “the cure,” including the line “I’m unraveled,” which fits the theme of her new tour.

Rodrigo later shared photos from the opening night on Instagram, describing the first show as a special moment after spending the past year planning the production.

The striking dress was custom-designed for Rodrigo by British designer Hussein Chalayan. The water-reactive design was originally created for his Spring 2016 collection and was inspired by Cuba.

According to Vogue, Chalayan spent six months developing the design. The original concept used dissolving outer layers to reveal what was underneath.

Rodrigo's Hartford show featured six different looks and five costume changes. The concert was divided into seasonal sections, beginning with a colorful spring-inspired setting before moving through summer, autumn and winter.

During an acoustic portion of the show, Rodrigo appeared in a purple leather dress, while other performances featured a white babydoll dress and a cropped graphic T-shirt paired with hot-pink micro shorts.

The North American leg of the Unraveled Tour will take Rodrigo to several cities, including Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Chicago and Boston. The tour is scheduled to conclude in February with 10 performances at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center from February 11 through February 28.

Rodrigo has previously spoken about comments surrounding some of her stage outfits. In a May interview with the New York Times’ “Popcast,” she said she found it disturbing that people sexualized her babydoll dresses, explaining that she viewed the style as being inspired by artists such as Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love.
