After a long stretch of online rumors and fan casting debates, Disney has officially locked in the lead actors for the live-action version of Tangled. The confirmation came on January 7, 2026, ending months of speculation around the project.
The film is being directed by Michael Gracey, whose previous work leaned heavily into music and emotion. Because of that, many fans are already expecting this remake to feel closer to a stage musical than a typical CGI-heavy Disney reboot.
Casting decisions were finalized after private screen tests in London toward the end of 2025.
Rapunzel will be played by Teagan Croft. She is best known for her role as Raven in Titans and later appeared in Netflix’s survival drama True Spirit. Disney seems to be betting on her ability to carry emotional scenes rather than star power alone.
Flynn Rider, or Eugene Fitzherbert, goes to Milo Manheim. He already has a strong Disney connection thanks to the Zombies franchise and recently showed a more serious side in School Spirits. For many fans, his casting feels like a safe but logical choice.
The role of Mother Gothel is still open. Scarlett Johansson was reportedly attached at one point, but she exited the project after committing to The Batman Part II. Disney is now actively searching for the right villain, which could shape the film’s final tone.

Production is expected to begin in June 2026. Most scenes will be shot in the United Kingdom, using real historic locations instead of green screens. Disney wants the Kingdom of Corona to feel more grounded and less fantasy-heavy this time around.
There is no official release date yet. Still, based on the filming timeline, a 2027 theatrical release is widely expected within the industry.
This is not a frame-by-frame remake of the animated film.
Music will still matter, especially with Gracey directing, but the storytelling is expected to feel more modern. The script is written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, which suggests sharper dialogue and slightly updated character dynamics.
Visually, Disney is stepping back from heavy CGI and leaning into natural landscapes. That alone sets this Tangled apart from several recent live-action remakes.
With casting now confirmed and cameras set to roll next year, Disney’s live-action Tangled is officially real — and the countdown has quietly begun.
