‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Hits 5.7M Viewers on HBO Max

It Welcome to Derry

It: Welcome to Derry has officially made a terrifyingly strong debut, pulling in 5.7 million viewers within its first three days.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the viewership figure combines Nielsen data from HBO’s linear channel with HBO Max streaming numbers. That puts the new horror prequel in third place among all HBO Max series premieres, trailing only behind House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

A Chilling Prequel to Stephen King’s “It”

Set in the same universe as Stephen King’s 1986 novel “It”, the new series expands on the mythology of the terrifying clown Pennywise. “It: Welcome to Derry” explores the origin story of the child-hunting monster that haunts the fictional town of Derry, Maine.

The show stars Bill Skarsgård reprising his iconic role as Pennywise. The ensemble cast also includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Blake Cameron James, Arian S. Cartaya, Amanda Christine, Matilda Lawler, Clara Stack, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso.

Creative Team Behind the Horror

The television series was developed by Andy Muschietti, who also directed the hit films It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), alongside his sister Barbara Muschietti and writer Jason Fuchs.

The trio serves as executive producers under the Double Dream production banner, joined by Bill Skarsgård, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin.

Jason Fuchs penned the first episode and co-showruns the series with Brad Caleb Kane, while Andy Muschietti directs multiple episodes to ensure the show’s cinematic continuity with the original films.

With its gripping storyline, chilling atmosphere, and strong opening numbers, “It: Welcome to Derry” cements itself as one of HBO Max’s most successful horror launches to date — proving Pennywise’s terrifying legacy is far from over.
