Fans of Stephen King’s It may be heading back to Derry once again. The prequel series It: Welcome to Derry has not been officially renewed for a second season, but the creators have said from the beginning that the story was planned as a three-season arc.
The series is co-created by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. Season 1 was set in 1962 and focused on the Black Spot massacre, one of the interludes from King’s novel. The first season ran for eight episodes.

"We can only say the stuff that’s already known, like it’s in 1935, 27 years before Season 1 and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books. It takes place during the Depression in Derry, and there are some new… pic.twitter.com/M3PvFhAD0y

According to the creators, Season 2 would likely take place in 1935 and focus on the Bradley Gang. The group, made up of bank robbers during the Great Depression, arrives in Derry under pressure and becomes entangled with the town. In the story, townspeople later claim they saw a clown holding a gun during the gang’s violent end.
Andy Muschietti has also said the season would explore the origins of the Neibolt House, the structure built above Pennywise’s lair. Questions around who built it, why it was abandoned, and how it connects to Pennywise are expected to be addressed.

The Season 1 finale introduced the idea of time travel, which Muschietti suggested could play a role going forward. He has hinted that future episodes may explore whether Pennywise can move through time and alter events already known to audiences.
Looking ahead, a potential third season would travel even further back in time. The creators have said it would center on the Kitchener Ironworks explosion, another key event from Stephen King’s novel.
