It’s official! Jamal Roberts is the new American Idol champion. The emotional finale of Season 23 aired on Sunday, May 18, with the top three contestants—John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Roberts—battling it out on stage for America’s vote.
The night began with an epic group performance of "We Are the Champions" by Queen. Host Ryan Seacrest announced that voting had begun as excitement filled the air.
In the first elimination of the evening, Breanna Nix was voted into third place. The final two—Roberts and Foster—awaited the big reveal.
After show-stopping guest performances from Goo Goo Dolls, Salt-N-Pepa, Patti LaBelle, and others, Seacrest announced a huge increase in votes this season before revealing that Jamal Roberts had won it all.
Roberts first wowed the judges with a soulful version of Rick James’ "Mary Jane" during auditions. Judge Lionel Richie praised his vocal ability and storytelling skills.
But this wasn’t Roberts’ first time trying out for the show. He revealed in an April interview that he had auditioned twice before but didn’t make it through. "I didn’t give up," he said. "I took every ‘no’ and turned it into motivation."
Roberts earns a recording deal with Hollywood Records, with $250,000 in prize money—$125,000 upfront and another $100,000 upon album completion. He’ll also receive up to $300,000 in advance funds for recording, which will be paid back through future earnings.
The finale was packed with incredible performances by Jessica Simpson, Kirk Franklin, Brandon Lake, and judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, who sang his classic "Stuck on You" with the panel.
