For the first time ever, a Broadway show was aired live on national television. CNN made history by broadcasting Good Night, and Good Luck from New York City's Winter Garden Theatre. With over 20 cameras capturing every angle, viewers across the country watched the acclaimed production as it unfolded live.
George Clooney, making his Broadway debut, played legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow. Clooney, who also directed and co-wrote the original 2005 film, received a Tony nomination for his performance. He even dyed his hair for the role, a detail that stirred fans online.
Good Night and Good Luck live tonight was marvelous and oh, that ending! George Clooney was superb. First time a live Broadway play was televised worldwide.

Many were surprised — and thrilled — to spot comedian Ilana Glazer in the cast. Known for Broad City, Glazer played Shirley Wershba, a producer and writer in Murrow’s newsroom. The cast also included Mac Brandt, Clark Gregg, Carter Hudson, Fran Kranz, and others.
Viewers quickly noticed the strong parallels between the play's message and current events. Clooney's performance as Murrow confronting Senator Joseph McCarthy resonated with many watching live. Social media lit up with reactions about how the themes still feel timely — particularly in the context of today’s political climate.
“This is like watching history repeat itself. Thank you, CNN and George Clooney,” one viewer wrote.
