Netflix’s latest genre-bending series, The WONDERfools, is taking social media by storm, and actor Im Seong-jae is walking away with the best reviews. Playing the physically massive but deeply gentle Kang Ro-bin, Im delivers a masterclass in combining high-stakes action with pure comedic timing.

Working in the kitchen of Hearty House, a local restaurant run by Madam Kim Jeon-bok (Kim Hae-sook), Ro-bin is the ultimate loyal best friend to Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun-bin). But beneath his intimidating build lies a shy, soft-hearted character who stumbles into becoming a makeshift superhero.

The entire plot shifts into high gear during a chaotic sequence where a fake kidnapping scheme organized by Chae-ni goes horribly wrong. After Chae-ni suffers a sudden heart attack, a panicked Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun attempt to hide her body near a trash dump.
Instead of a tragedy, the trio accidentally uncovers a hidden underground laboratory leaking toxic chemical waste. The exposure resurrects Chae-ni and triggers bizarre, unpredictable superpowers in all three characters.

While classic superheroes get stronger through training or pure rage, Ro-bin’s superhuman strength is entirely tied to his emotional vulnerability. He cannot use his strength on command. Instead, his powers only activate when:

Someone directly insults him
He hears aggressive profanity

The more emotionally devastated or offended Ro-bin gets, the stronger he becomes. This creates a brilliant comedic dynamic throughout the show, forcing his team to constantly bully and insult him on purpose just to make him strong enough to smash through doors or fight off enemies. However, the show keeps the stakes grounded by revealing a dark cost—overusing these powers causes the characters to cough up blood, hinting at a fatal countdown.

Behind-the-scenes details reveal that Im Seong-jae went to extreme lengths to bring the specific vision of Ro-bin to life. To contrast his large frame with a harmless, kind-hearted face, the actor deliberately overate during production, frequenting coffee trucks to maintain a softer jawline and a visible double chin.
Furthermore, Im chose to play the character with partially closed, heavy eyes to naturally convey Ro-bin's perpetual shyness and nervous energy.

Despite the heavy reliance on wirework and CGI, Im noted that the most exhausting part of the role was making the physics of super-strength look real. Instead of posing like a traditional hero, he focused on portraying the raw physical strain and muscle pain required to lift heavy objects, ensuring the performance stayed authentic rather than cartoonish.
