Sydney Sweeney stars in Christy, a powerful biopic based on the life of American boxing legend Christy Martin — famously known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter.” The film captures her incredible rise in a male-dominated sport and the dark personal battles that nearly cost her life.

Before she became a sports icon, Christy Martin had no plans to enter the boxing world. While studying at Concord College, she was convinced by friends to join a local Toughwoman contest in 1987. Despite no training, she won all her matches and the $1,000 prize.
What started as a one-time event soon turned into a career-defining journey. In 1991, after a surprising draw in a match meant to be a mismatch, Christy realized her competitive spirit wouldn’t let her walk away.

Christy’s big break came in 1993 when she met famous boxing promoter Don King, who signed her as the first female boxer under his banner. Her charisma and raw strength soon made her a star attraction on King’s events.
Over the years, Christy achieved incredible success — winning the WBC Super Welterweight Championship and earning around $4.5 million. Her record: 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws, including 31 knockouts. In 2016, she became the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame and later joined the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.
Christy’s personal life told a very different story. After college, she began training under Jim Martin, a man 25 years older who initially didn’t believe women belonged in the sport. What began as a coach-student relationship turned romantic, and the two eventually married.
But behind the public image, Christy’s marriage was abusive and controlling. Jim managed every part of her career — and her life. According to Christy, he used her sexuality against her, threatening to expose her as gay if she ever left him.
In November 2010, after reconnecting with her high school girlfriend Sherry Lusk and asking for a divorce, Christy’s life took a horrific turn. Jim violently attacked her — stabbing her multiple times and shooting her with her own gun.
Despite her severe injuries, Christy managed to escape and flag down a passing car for help. She was airlifted to a trauma center and miraculously survived. Jim Martin was arrested a week later and sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder. He died in 2024 while serving his sentence.

The movie Christy was made with Christy Martin’s full involvement. Director David Michôd and writer Mirrah Foulkes worked closely with her to ensure accuracy and respect. Christy even visited the set with her emotional support dog, Champ, to oversee filming.
Although the film condenses some events — including combining her past relationships into a single character — it stays true to her journey of resilience and empowerment. Christy wanted the film to inspire domestic violence survivors and families learning to accept their loved ones for who they are.
Today, Christy is happily married to fellow boxer Lisa Holewyne, whom she once fought in 2001.

Director Michôd instantly knew Sydney Sweeney was right for the role. The Euphoria actress had real MMA training experience from age 12 to 19, which made her perfect to portray a fighter.
To prepare, Sweeney trained intensively — boxing three hours a day and lifting weights twice daily for nearly three months. She gained 35 pounds of muscle for authenticity. “I worked hardest on that left hook,” Sweeney said. “And I think what would get me through a fight is that I can take a punch. I wouldn’t quit.”
Christy isn’t just a boxing movie — it’s a powerful story about fighting for identity, freedom, and survival. Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal brings new life to Christy Martin’s courage, reminding viewers that real champions don’t just fight in the ring — they fight to live.
