Review-Bombing Plagues Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' Overseas Despite Strong Domestic Opening

The Little Mermaid three-day opening of $95.5 million, a four-day weekend - projections soaring to $117.5 million.

The Little Mermaid Dominates Top 5 Global Markets

Mexico ($8.5 million),

UK ($6.3 million),

Italy ($4.7 million),

Brazil ($4 million),

Australia ($4 million).

The international IMAX earnings amounted to $1.5 million, contributing to the film's global total of $8.5 million.

Despite boasting a commendable 95% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film faced an onslaught of negative user reviews on international film rating websites such as IMDB. These websites even issued advisories cautioning users about the abundance of negative reviews that seemed suspicious.

Halle Bailey Shines Amidst Criticisms of 'The Little Mermaid' in International Markets

The Little Mermaid was initially anticipated to primarily cater to a domestic audience. However, the overseas reactions, believed to be primarily fueled by internet trolls, have left industry insiders astonished. In France, where the film debuted on Wednesday, AlloCiné took the unusual step of writing, "We are currently witnessing an unusual distribution of scores that warrants caution. We encourage you to form your own opinion about the film." Although not unprecedented, this move is quite rare.

IMDB:  To maintain the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied." This notice was visible on the US, Canadian, UK, Brazilian, and Mexican IMDB sites. IMDB explained that it publishes weighted vote averages instead of raw data averages. They clarified that when unusual voting activity is detected, an alternative weighting calculation is implemented to ensure the system's reliability. However, they did not disclose the specific method employed to generate the rating.

Germany: rating of 0.7 out of 10 for The Little Mermaid, significantly lower than any comparable title. However, as the weekend progressed, the rating climbed to 5.

Some criticisms have revolved around murky lighting and questioning the motives behind remaking a classic. Unfortunately, certain pockets of the world witnessed racially charged commentary, which is deeply regrettable.

Korea's SBS News reported a phenomenon referred to as "ratings terrorism," and an article's title, translated by Korean entertainment website.

However, amidst the criticism, many have praised Halle Bailey's performance.

The film's performance in China has been nothing short of a disaster, with no audience score available on Maoyan, a rarity for a film that has been in release for several days. The box office results up until Sunday were a dismal RMB 17.7 million ($2.5 million), with Maoyan projecting a total run of approximately $4 million.
