Mayor Speaks Out Against Sean Reifel's Departure

Love Island USA contestant Sean Reifel is facing criticism from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Mayor J. William Reynolds after leaving his position as a police officer to appear on Season 8 of the reality dating series.

According to Reynolds, Sean resigned from the Bethlehem Police Department less than a year after being sworn into the force.

Speaking to local outlet WHTM on May 29, the mayor said the city had invested significant resources into Sean's training and expressed disappointment over his decision to leave.

Reynolds noted that taxpayer money was used to send Sean to the police academy and said his departure created another vacancy within the department.

He also questioned Sean's decision to pursue reality television instead of continuing his law enforcement career.

Bethlehem Police Chief Reacts to Sean's Exit

Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott also addressed Sean's departure.

While describing him as a good person and a strong officer, Kott said she was disappointed to see him leave the department.

She explained that recruiting qualified officers remains a challenge for police departments across the country and said vacancies are difficult to fill.

Kott added that departments are relying heavily on overtime to cover staffing shortages and that many officers are experiencing burnout.

According to Kott, Sean's final day with the Bethlehem Police Department was May 20.

Sean Reifel Was Sworn In Less Than a Year Ago

Sean joined the Bethlehem Police Department in August 2025.

At the time, a Facebook post shared by the department stated that he had taken an oath to serve and protect the City of Bethlehem with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.

His departure came less than a year after officially joining the force.

Sean Appears on Love Island USA Season 8

Despite leaving the department in May, Sean referred to himself as a police officer during the Love Island USA Season 8 premiere, which aired on June 2.

During the episode, he formed an early connection with Paralympian Beatriz Hatz.

The pair shared several kisses during the opening challenge, and when it came time for the women to select their partners, Beatriz chose Sean as her match.
