Why Rivals Changed a Memorable Rupert and Taggie Scene

Rivals returned with more romance, tension, and rivalry in its second season, but fans quickly noticed one important change from Jilly Cooper’s original novel.

The change involves a memorable scene between Rupert, Taggie, and Tony during the first three episodes of Season 2.

Rupert and Taggie Grow Closer

At the end of Season 1, Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell, shared a kiss with Taggie, played by Bella Maclean.

However, Rupert remained in a relationship with Cameron after her violent confrontation with Tony, portrayed by David Tennant.

Despite the complicated relationships, Rupert and Taggie continue growing closer in Season 2. Taggie also develops a strong bond with Rupert’s children, especially his daughter Tabitha.

The Show Changed Who Delivered an Important Line

In Cooper’s original book, Rupert and Taggie take the children to a restaurant where a manager mistakes Taggie for one of Rupert’s children because of the age difference between them.

The manager comments that Rupert has “three such beautiful children.”

However, the Hulu adaptation changed the scene entirely.

In the series, Rupert and Taggie visit Bas’ bar instead of a restaurant. Since everyone there already knows the characters personally, the writers decided it would feel unrealistic for a stranger to make the same mistake.

Instead, Tony delivers the line directly to Rupert in a much more sarcastic and insulting way.

Producers Say the TV Version Felt ‘Juicier’

According to TV Insider, executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins explained that the team originally planned for another diner to say the line.

But executive producer Alexander Lamb believed it felt weaker coming from an unknown character.

Treadwell-Collins said giving the line to Tony made the moment “juicier” because of the intense rivalry already building between Tony and Rupert.

The producers also revealed that Jilly Cooper herself approved of the adjustment before her death in October 2025. According to them, Cooper even believed the scene worked better in the show than in the book.

Tony’s Rivalry With Rupert Continues to Grow

The series also changed the timing of Rupert’s major exposé storyline compared to the novel.

The producers explained that moving the storyline earlier in the season made Tony’s mocking comment feel more meaningful because he was already planning ways to attack Rupert publicly.

That decision helped strengthen the emotional tension leading into Episodes 2 and 3.

Rivals Continues to Expand Beyond the Books

While Rivals still follows much of Cooper’s original story, the Hulu adaptation has continued making selective changes to improve pacing and drama for television audiences.

So far, many viewers appear to support the updated direction, especially with the growing tension between Rupert, Taggie, and Tony.
