A Surprise Early Renewal as Dunk & Egg Prepare for Their Big Debut

Westeros fans, it’s happening AGAIN — and sooner than you expected. HBO has officially renewed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for Season 2, and here’s the twist: the renewal comes before Season 1 has even premiered. HBO clearly believes they’ve got a hit on their hands, and honestly, same.

The Game of Thrones prequel will premiere on January 18, 2026, but the second season is already locked in for 2027. Casey Bloys, HBO’s Chairman and CEO, revealed the news during the network’s big presentation in New York, and fans instantly lost it online.

Originally, the series was supposed to drop in late 2025, but the slight delay keeps it clear of the HBO–Sky deal and perfectly positions it for the HBO Max launch in the UK and Ireland. Smart move.

A Smaller, Faster, Sharper GoT Prequel

Unlike House of the Dragon (which takes two years per season because it’s basically dragon-fueled chaos), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is designed for a quicker turnaround. Each season has six half-hour episodes, meaning shorter, punchier storytelling vs GoT’s epic hour-long battles.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama, confirmed the vision: this series is more intimate, more character-driven, and focused on the legendary duo Dunk and Egg — played by Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell. And according to early insiders, both are absolute perfection in their roles.

HBO is already mapping out all three seasons to cover George R.R. Martin’s complete Dunk and Egg novella trilogy. Yup — the whole story is planned from the start. Love that energy.

Where Does This Fit in the GoT Timeline?

Set 100 years before Game of Thrones and 72 years after House of the Dragon, the show follows:

  • Dunk, a humble but brave knight

  • Egg, his mysterious young squire… who is secretly a Targaryen

Expect wandering adventures, risky quests, unexpected enemies, and — if Martin gets his wish — “the best jousting sequences ever put on film.”

House of the Dragon Also Gets Renewed

Along with all the Dunk & Egg excitement, HBO also handed House of the Dragon an early Season 4 renewal for 2028. So fans are guaranteed back-to-back Westeros content for at least the next three years.

Francesca Orsi summed it up best: HBO is “thrilled” to bring audiences more stories from one of the richest fantasy universes ever created. And between the underdog charm of Dunk and Egg and the fiery chaos of the Targaryens, the next few years of GoT content look stacked.
