Concert tickets have become much more expensive in recent years. One big reason is the use of bots and scalpers who buy tickets fast and resell them for a much higher price.
Bots are automated computer programs that can quickly buy tickets as soon as they go on sale. Scalpers use these bots to:
Scan ticket websites instantly for popular shows
Create many fake accounts to buy more tickets
Send thousands of buy requests in seconds
Avoid being caught by normal security checks
Because bots grab tickets so fast, real fans often miss out. Then scalpers sell these tickets on other websites at prices 10 to 30 times higher than the original.
The scalpers and resale websites are the ones who make money from these high prices. The artists and venues usually don’t get any of the extra money that fans pay on resale sites.
Some believe scalpers highlight that official ticket prices are often set too low compared to what fans will actually pay. If artists or venues used pricing that changes with demand, scalpers might earn less.
But many artists want to keep ticket prices affordable for fans or maintain a good reputation, which can unintentionally give scalpers a chance to profit.
