It’s been a tough year for Sydney Sweeney.
After a string of ambitious projects, the actress’s latest release, Christy, is shaping up to be her third box office disappointment in 2025.
The sports biopic, based on the life of boxing legend Christy Martin, is projected to earn under $2 million in its opening weekend — a steep drop compared to expectations and pre-release Oscar buzz.

Despite early excitement, Christy hasn’t managed to connect with mainstream audiences.
The movie currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting a mix of praise and criticism.
Sweeney stars alongside Ben Foster, Katy O’Brian, Jess Gabor, Ethan Embry, and Merritt Wever. Critics have applauded her performance, calling it “raw and powerful,” but that hasn’t translated to ticket sales.
Much of the feedback points to the film’s niche appeal — a well-made biopic that simply isn’t drawing large theater crowds.

The biggest hurdle for Christy is its limited mass reach.
Audiences appear more inclined to wait for streaming releases than pay for theater tickets, especially for smaller biographical dramas.
This shift in viewing behavior has hurt similar titles in 2025, and Christy seems to be the latest casualty of that trend.

It’s a surprising downturn for Sweeney, who just two years ago was celebrating the romantic comedy hit Anyone But You, which earned over $218 million globally.
Her following films, however, haven’t shared the same success.
Madame Web (2024): A critical and commercial disappointment.
Immaculate (2024): Opened at $5 million on a modest budget of $9 million — decent, but not breakout.
Americana: Made under $500,000 on a $9 million budget.
Eden: Cost $35 million, but earned only $2.5 million.
Now, Christy is expected to take in just around $1.25 million, further clouding her once-promising box office image
There’s still hope on the horizon.
Sweeney’s upcoming project, The Housemaid, set to release in December 2025, could turn things around.
Directed by Paul Feig, the thriller also stars Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. Industry watchers expect a stronger performance — but it faces stiff competition from James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, one of the year’s most anticipated blockbusters.
