Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy Review: A Sweet but Predictable Love Story

Tyler Perry’s latest film, Finding Joy, brings together two attractive leads, a snowy setting, and a cozy cabin straight out of a Christmas card. On paper, it’s a recipe for holiday comfort. But while Perry has grown as a filmmaker in recent years, this one feels more like a step back than a new chapter.

A Snowstorm Sparks a Familiar Connection

The story centers on Joy, played by Shannon Thornton, a talented New York fashion designer whose personal and professional life is crumbling. After discovering that the man she’s been seeing is already engaged, she drives off in frustration — right into a Colorado blizzard.

When her car crashes through a sheet of ice, she’s miraculously rescued by Ridge (Tosin Morohunfola), a brooding recluse living alone in the woods. What follows is a snowbound romance where frustration slowly melts into affection.

A Story We’ve Seen Before

From the moment Joy wakes up in Ridge’s cabin, the film becomes entirely predictable. He’s guarded and mysterious; she’s open-hearted and hurt. They argue, share whiskey by the fire, and begin to see each other differently. Every beat arrives exactly when you expect it to.

Perry’s attempt to capture an old-fashioned holiday romance works in parts — the lighting is warm, the cabin inviting — but the script leans too heavily on clichés. Even the emotional symmetry between Joy and Ridge, both healing from betrayal, feels more constructed than heartfelt.

A few supporting moments, especially Joy’s chatty New York friends, add humor and pace, though they disappear too quickly to make a lasting impression.

Final Thoughts

Finding Joy isn’t without charm. It’s beautifully shot, softly scored, and Perry’s direction shows polish. But the film’s emotional arc feels safe, as if afraid to take risks. It’s a story about love, healing, and second chances — one that warms the heart, but only slightly.

If you’re in the mood for something gentle, romantic, and easy to watch, Finding Joy will do the trick. Just don’t expect to find anything you haven’t seen before.
