The world of Jane Austen has just witnessed a rare and emotional "full-circle" moment. In the new BritBox spinoff, The Other Bennet Sister, the actress who famously played Mary Bennet in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, Lucy Briers, has returned—but this time, she’s playing the mentor.

Briers stars as Mrs. Hill, a kind-hearted employee and confidante to the new Mary Bennet, played by Ella Bruccoleri. This casting isn't just a nod to the past; it serves as a bridge between two generations of the often-overlooked Bennet sisters.

For Ella Bruccoleri, having Briers on set was more than just professional support; it was personal. Bruccoleri shared with TV Insider that Briers officially "passed the baton" during their first read-through.
In the show’s early episodes, Mrs. Hill provides the emotional care that Mary’s mother, Mrs. Bennet (played by Ruth Jones), fails to give. Bruccoleri noted that this bond translated into real life, stating that Briers looked after her and helped her navigate the "daunting" task of leading a major period drama.

The series creator and writer, Sarah Quintrell, revealed that she always had Briers in mind while writing the script. Having been inspired by Briers’ 1995 performance, Quintrell wanted to create a world where the "original" Mary could finally see her successor find happiness.

"The idea that 1995 Mary knows that 2026 Mary is OK really meant the world to me," Quintrell explained. One of the most touching moments occurred during filming for Episode 3, where Mrs. Hill says goodbye to Mary as she leaves for London—a scene that reportedly left the crew in tears.
Lucy Briers herself described the experience as deeply emotional. Having always felt protective of the character she played over 30 years ago, she found it healing to give the "new" Mary the advice she never received in the original story. Briers expressed pride in Bruccoleri’s portrayal, noting that passing on the role felt like a beautiful, symbolic conclusion to her own journey with the character.
