Del Toro, fresh off his Oscar win for Pinocchio, has spent more than a decade developing this adaptation. “My favorite novel in the world is Frankenstein,” he told Collider in 2010. “The monster says, ‘I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.’” This theme of misunderstood monsters has echoed throughout Del Toro’s entire career — and now, he’s returning to its literary origin.
