Del Toro, fresh off his Oscar win for Pinocchio, has spent more than a decade developing this adaptation. “My favorite novel in the world is Frankenstein,” he told Collider in 2010. “The monster says, ‘I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.’” This theme of misunderstood monsters has echoed throughout Del Toro’s entire career — and now, he’s returning to its literary origin.
Del Toro’s film is a faithful yet visually daring adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic classic. It follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but prideful scientist who dares to bring life to the dead — only to create a tragic being that leads to both their downfalls.

New stills reveal Elordi cloaked in shadows, Isaac lecturing a medical hall, and Goth draped in peacock feathers and jewels — a perfect blend of gothic atmosphere and human vulnerability.
Del Toro has long credited Mary Shelley as one of his greatest inspirations. In his BAFTA acceptance speech for The Shape of Water, he praised her as “a figure as important in my life as if she were family.” He noted that whenever he feels discouraged, he thinks of Shelley’s teenage genius that birthed one of the greatest horror stories ever written.
