Hunger Games Prequel Teaser Smashes 109M Views in One Day

Sunrise On The Reaping Delivers Lionsgate’s 2nd Biggest Trailer Launch

The Hunger Games fandom just proved it’s very much alive. Lionsgate’s newest prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, exploded online with a jaw-dropping 109 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the second biggest trailer launch in the studio’s history. Oh, and their other biggest launch? Also from this month. Lionsgate is on fire.

The teaser, based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling new novel released in March, doesn’t hit theaters until November 20, 2026—but the hype is already wild. The only thing beating it? Lionsgate’s own Michael teaser, which dropped earlier this month and raked in 116 million views in a single day. That one has now soared past 300 million and is officially the most-watched trailer for any music biopic ever.

Meanwhile, Sunrise on the Reaping is fueling a total franchise revival. The Hunger Games: On Stage just opened in London, and Lionsgate’s Hunger Games bundle shot to #1 on Apple TV last night thanks to a special promotion. Basically: Panem is having a full-blown comeback moment.

And the numbers don’t lie.
The Hunger Games franchise includes five novels, translated into 52 languages, with more than 100 million copies sold worldwide. The movies alone have raked in an enormous $3.4 billion globally.

The new book Sunrise on the Reaping broke records too—selling 1.5 million copies in its first week, the biggest opening for any Hunger Games title. In the U.S., it sold 1.2 million copies, doubling Songbirds and Snakes and tripling Mockingjay. Suzanne Collins stays winning.

Who’s Behind the New Film?

Fan-favorite director Francis Lawrence is back, continuing the legacy he started with Catching Fire, the Mockingjay films, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The screenplay is written by Oscar-nominated Billy Ray, and franchise producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson return as well.

The cast is stacked, featuring:

  • Joseph Zada

  • Jesse Plemons

  • Ralph Fiennes

  • Glenn Close

  • Kieran Culkin

  • Elle Fanning

  • Mckenna Grace

  • Maya Hawke

  • Whitney Peak

  • Kelvin Harrison Jr.

What Is Sunrise on the Reaping About?

The story revisits Panem 24 years before Katniss Everdeen enters the arena. It starts on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, better known as the Second Quarter Quell—one of the deadliest and most infamous games in the franchise’s history.

With a record-smashing teaser, massive demand for the books and movies, and a powerhouse cast, Sunrise on the Reaping is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of 2026. The Games are officially back—and the Capitol approves.
