Citadel Season 2 ends with betrayal, emotional twists, and a major death that could change the future of the series forever. While fans expected answers after the long gap between seasons, the finale instead leaves several questions open, especially about Mason Kane and Nadia’s future.

According to fan reactions online and critics reviewing the finale, many viewers felt the season focused more on setting up future stories rather than delivering a strong conclusion.
The main storyline in Season 2 follows Paulo Braga, who plans to assassinate the Russian Prime Minister to gain control over dangerous satellites capable of massive destruction.
To carry out the mission, Paulo forces Bernard to create a chip that can turn people into emotionless killers. After early experiments fail, Paulo targets Abby, Mason Kane’s wife, and reawakens her hidden identity as Celeste.
The season later reveals another shocking twist involving “Edison,” the only person besides Bernard capable of activating the chip quickly enough. Everyone believes Edison is Ha-Joon, but the truth is that Edison is actually Ha-Joon’s wife, while Ha-Joon himself is only a cover identity.

The biggest moment of the finale comes when Abby, controlled by the assassin chip, attacks Mason Kane.
Even after being badly injured, Mason still tries to protect Nadia and tells her he loves her before collapsing. The emotional scene strongly suggests Mason finally accepted the life he wanted — not as a spy, but as a husband and father.
By the end of the episode, Mason appears to be truly dead.
Unlike many spy thrillers that leave room for surprise returns, the finale treats his death as permanent. Bernard later blames Joana for Mason’s death and kills her in revenge.
Fans are now debating whether the show will somehow bring Mason back in a future season, though many viewers believe that would weaken the emotional impact of the finale.

Although Abby was originally meant to carry out the assassination, Bernard secretly arranges another plan.
Frank disguises himself as a security guard and kills Russian Prime Minister Aronov using a hidden needle attack. This allows Bernard to move forward with his own agenda involving the satellites.
Later, Bernard deactivates the satellites entirely, causing them to break apart and crash back toward Earth. The move prevents further misuse but also creates massive destruction.
After realizing she killed Mason, Abby can no longer live with the guilt.
During the final confrontation, she forces Nadia to shoot her by moving close to Nadia’s weapon. Abby dies believing there is no future left for her after Mason’s death.
The scene also leaves fans heartbroken for Hendrix, the daughter Abby and Mason leave behind.
Two months after the deadly events, Nadia visits Mason and Abby’s graves, where Bernard approaches her with a new offer.
According to Bernard, new enemies could still target Nadia and her daughter Asha, making it impossible for her to fully leave the spy world behind.
At first, Nadia refuses to work with him again. However, before leaving, she gives Bernard information about surviving Citadel agents who may help destroy the remaining Manticore families.
The ending strongly hints that Nadia’s story is far from over.
The final scene introduces Aparna, a mysterious woman connected to Joana and Ha-Joon earlier in the season.
Nadia confronts her at gunpoint while Aparna quietly unpacks groceries. The moment suggests there may be a deeper connection between the two characters, possibly tied to Nadia’s past.
The scene also hints that future seasons may connect the main series with other Citadel spin-offs more directly.
Season 2 closes with several major characters dead, Citadel still destroyed, and the Manticore families continuing to operate.
While the finale delivers emotional moments and shocking betrayals, it mainly feels like a setup for future stories rather than a complete ending. Fans will now wait to see whether Nadia rebuilds Citadel, and whether Mason Kane is truly gone for good.
