For five seasons, Prime Video's hit series The Boys has relied on a familiar pattern: the team uncovers a weapon capable of killing Homelander, fans get excited, the plan completely falls apart, and Billy Butcher is forced to scramble for a backup.

With the highly anticipated Season 5 finale, titled "Blood and Bone," dropping on May 20, 2026, viewers are asking the ultimate question: Who is actually left to stop Homelander? Despite showrunner Eric Kripke claiming one major character is out of the picture, the narrative math points straight back to a familiar face in a cryogenic tube.
The updated virus strain was supposed to be the definitive endgame. Developed by Dr. Sameer Shah, the bioweapon worked perfectly on Rock Hard in Episode 2, giving Butcher a genuine shot at victory.

However, the foundation crumbled when Soldier Boy proved immune to the strain due to his unique V1 biology. The ultimate disaster struck in Episode 6 when Homelander managed to get his hands on the V1 serum, rendering the virus useless against him and turning the deadly bioweapon into a failed science project.
With the virus out of play, the remaining heroes do not inspire much confidence heading into the final showdown:
Marie Moreau: While her blood-bending abilities are incredibly powerful, her durability and speed cannot match a V1-enhanced Homelander.

Kimiko: Butcher attempted to replicate Soldier Boy's radiation blast by exposing Kimiko to enriched uranium. However, the brutal experiments only slowed her healing factor down, showing no signs of transferring the power.

Frenchie: Following his tragic death, the team lost the only mind capable of rewriting the chemical formulas.

This leaves Soldier Boy as the only logical option. In Episode 7, his own son choked him unconscious and sealed him back inside a cryogenic chamber. Showrunner Eric Kripke later stated in interviews that Soldier Boy would not appear in the finale and that his story was finished.

But in the world of The Boys, this feels like a massive misdirection. The radioactive chest blast carried by Soldier Boy remains the only proven method to strip a Supe of their powers permanently.
Waking up inside a cage for a second time, betrayed by his own bloodline, provides the exact psychological motivation Soldier Boy needs to switch sides completely. Ending the entire series with its best weapon stuck on ice while Kimiko tries a half-baked superpower extraction would be a massive creative gamble. If Homelander is going down in "Blood and Bone," the man in the tube might still have to pull the trigger.
