The Critics Choice Awards red carpet had no shortage of standout looks, but few drew as much laughter as what Hacks stars Meg Stalter and Paul W. Downs pulled off on Sunday afternoon.

Instead of playing it safe, the duo leaned fully into comedy. Stalter and Downs arrived wearing bold orange vinyl outfits, clearly poking fun at the viral looks worn by Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner at the New York premiere of Chalamet’s new film Marty Supreme.

They didn’t half-commit, either. Downs accessorized his outfit with a ping-pong paddle slung across his body like a cross-bag, while Stalter wore an oversized cross necklace — a clear nod to Jenner’s statement piece from the December premiere. The crowd on the carpet immediately caught on, and the joke landed.

Set in the 1950s, Marty Supreme follows an ordinary man chasing his dream of becoming the world ping-pong champion. Chalamet and Jenner’s bright orange premiere outfits became part of the film’s visual buzz, extending the same color theme used heavily in marketing the A24 release.

Downs, who also co-created Hacks alongside Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, said the outfits were never meant to be anything serious. Speaking to Variety on the carpet, he explained that the goal was simply to enjoy the night. Hacks is nominated for best comedy series, while Downs himself is up for supporting actor in a comedy.

“We just thought, let’s have fun,” he said, adding that the vinyl fabric turned out to be practical as well. Southern California has been hit by days of heavy rain, and the shiny outfits handled it surprisingly well.

“It’s waterproof,” Downs joked. Stalter chimed in, saying the rain practically slid right off her dress.

Downs also shared his praise for Marty Supreme, calling it a film he genuinely loved from director Josh Safdie. Stalter admitted she hasn’t seen it yet, despite being friends with Jenner.

The two women, she revealed, have a standing “sushi Fridays” tradition. “At least once a month,” Stalter said, noting that Chalamet usually doesn’t join. “It’s girl time.”

When asked whether Chalamet might ever appear on Hacks, Downs didn’t rule it out. “I’m not sure what he’d play,” he said with a smile, “but we’d make room.”

For one rainy afternoon, at least, Stalter and Downs proved that the red carpet still has space for jokes — and that sometimes the best fashion statement is not taking it too seriously.
