The finale of Stranger Things Season 5 is turning into a historic moment, not just for streaming but also for movie theaters. According to series co-creator Ross Duffer, nearly 1.1 million fans have RSVP’d to watch the final episode in theaters on New Year’s Eve.
In a post shared on Instagram, Duffer revealed that 3,500 showtimes are completely sold out across more than 620 theaters, highlighting the massive demand for the sci-fi show’s conclusion.
He also hinted that he and his brother Matt Duffer may attend select screenings. “What a way to close out a ten-year journey—together,” Ross wrote, adding that fans might spot them at a screening in Los Angeles.
Season 5 of the hit Netflix series was released in two parts. Volume 1, consisting of four episodes, premiered on Thanksgiving Day, while Volume 2 followed with three episodes on Christmas Day. Alongside the theatrical experience, the finale will also be released globally on Netflix on December 31.

The final chapter marks the end of one of Netflix’s most successful franchises ever. As previously reported, Stranger Things has surpassed 1.2 billion total views and contributed over $1.4 billion to the U.S. economy. Season 4, released in 2023, remains Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series of all time.
Season 5 has already made history by delivering Netflix’s biggest opening week ever for an English-language TV series after Volume 1 debuted. With eligibility opening in January, the season is widely expected to secure a spot among the platform’s most popular titles.
The series is executive produced by the Duffer Brothers through Upside Down Pictures, alongside Shawn Levy of 21 Laps Entertainment and producer Dan Cohen.
