Great news for fans of The Last of Us — HBO has officially renewed the hit series for a third season. The announcement came in April 2025, even before Season 2 had aired, showing the network’s strong confidence in the franchise.
Production for The Last of Us Season 3 is scheduled to begin in 2026. If the show follows its current timeline, we can likely expect a release in early 2027. Like previous seasons, it will continue adapting the events of the original video game series created by Naughty Dog.

Season 3 will continue with the story from The Last of Us Part II. This time, the narrative will focus heavily on Ellie’s personal mission to seek revenge against Abby — the woman responsible for killing her longtime guardian, Joel.

But it won’t be a one-sided story. As hinted in the Season 2 finale, the show will explore Abby’s side as well, diving into her motivations and inner conflict. Showrunner Craig Mazin and members of the cast have confirmed that the story will show both perspectives, deepening the emotional complexity of the characters.
Yes — that’s the expectation. Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby, will likely be promoted to the main cast for Season 3.

Ellie’s relationship with Dina, played by Isabela Merced, will be a major focus as well. Season 2’s tragic events, including Jesse’s death, have already shaken their dynamic. Season 3 will continue to explore the emotional fallout and how Ellie and Dina navigate their bond amid ongoing violence and loss.
Joel was killed early in Season 2, and Pedro Pascal made his last appearance in a heartfelt flashback in Episode 6. So far, Pascal hasn’t confirmed if he’ll return, but showrunner Craig Mazin has teased that fans should “never say never.”

Joel might reappear in more flashbacks or dream sequences, but he’s unlikely to have a major presence in the new season’s storyline.

Alongside Bella Ramsey as Ellie, we can expect the return of:
Isabela Merced as Dina
Gabriel Luna as Tommy
Young Mazino as Jesse (likely in flashbacks)
Kaitlyn Dever as Abby (in an expanded role)
