After weeks of theories and online speculation, showrunner Eric Kripke has finally revealed what really happened behind the scenes — and the reason had nothing to do with the story itself.

Played by Dominique McElligott, Queen Maeve became one of the most important characters in the series. Her exit in Season 3 felt emotional but unfinished to many fans, especially after the show repeatedly referenced her during the final season.

According to TV Insider, Eric Kripke confirmed that the team genuinely wanted Dominique McElligott to return for the final episode. He revealed that the two had exchanged emails over several months while planning the season. Kripke even reached out early to see whether she would be interested in appearing one last time.
But the actress had already stepped away from acting.

Kripke shared that McElligott politely told him she had “kind of retired” and was no longer taking new acting projects. On top of that, she was unavailable during the filming dates planned for the finale. The conversation, according to Kripke, was respectful and completely drama-free.
That revelation quickly caught fans off guard online. Many viewers had believed the repeated “previously on” scenes and references to Maeve throughout Season 5 were building toward a surprise comeback. Instead, they were meant as a tribute.
Maeve was last seen in the Season 3 finale after sacrificing herself to stop Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles. After absorbing the depowering blast, she survived but lost her powers and disappeared from public life alongside her girlfriend.
Kripke explained that even without a physical return, the writers wanted Maeve’s presence to be felt in the final season. He described her as part of a larger legacy of strong women in the series, connecting Maeve to Annie and eventually to Marie.
That emotional angle has resonated with many longtime fans. While some viewers were disappointed not to see Maeve again before the credits rolled, others appreciated that the character was allowed a peaceful ending away from Vought’s violence and manipulation.
The finale itself has already become one of the most talked-about TV endings online this week. Social media reactions have been deeply mixed, with some praising the emotional closure while others felt certain characters deserved more screen time in the final chapter.
Still, Queen Maeve’s impact on the show remains undeniable. From her complicated relationship with Homelander to her redemption arc and final sacrifice, the character became a fan favorite across the series’ run.
Even without appearing onscreen in the finale, Maeve’s story clearly still mattered to the people behind the show — and to fans who followed her journey from the very beginning.
