The film is described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” It was shot in the United Kingdom over six months. “Digger” marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since “The Revenant.”

Iñárritu is directing and producing the film. He also co-wrote the script in 2023 with his “Birdman” collaborators Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman. Tom Cruise is producing the film alongside Iñárritu.

Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell. Details about the plot have not been fully disclosed. Warner Bros. described the character as “the most powerful man in the world” who sets out on a mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before a disaster he has caused leads to widespread destruction.

The cast includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.

“Digger” is Cruise’s first film since signing a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this year to develop and produce theatrical features. His previous collaboration with the studio was “Edge of Tomorrow,” released in 2014.

The fall release date suggests the film could debut at a major international festival. Iñárritu has previously premiered films at Venice, including “Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” which earned an Oscar nomination for cinematography. His earlier works “Birdman” and “21 Grams” also screened there.

The director has also had a long association with Cannes, where “Amores Perros,” “Babel” and “Biutiful” were presented. His virtual-reality project “Flesh and Sand” later received a special achievement Oscar in 2018.
